Frequently Asked Questions - Cardiology

Q.1 What is a cardiovascular or heart disease?

  • Cardiovascular or heart disease covers the disorders of both heart and blood vessels. The major factors behind cardiovascular diseases are cigarette smoking, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, lack of exercise, and much more.

Q.2. How can a person prevent heart disease?

  • Prevention is always better than a cure. At first, the risk factors should be avoided to prevent any type of heart disease. Undergo regular check-ups and ask your physician to screen you for any type of cardiovascular disease like hypertension, diabetes, etc. Patients are required to cut down the cholesterol level and trim the fat from their diet. After maintaining the diet, the patient is required to do exercise and maintain a healthy weight to reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases.

Q.3. What is the difference between high cholesterol and low cholesterol levels?

  • There are two types of cholesterol, namely low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad" cholesterol) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL or "good" cholesterol). LDL is the prime reason behind artery-clogging plaque and HDL works for clearing the cholesterol from the blood. LDL or bad cholesterol level is a type in which a low LDL level is considered as good for health and high LDL is considered as bad for health as it increases the risk of heart diseases. HDL, on the other hand, is the good cholesterol that helps in removing the harmful and bad cholesterol from the body. Triglycerides, another type of fat, are also considered as one of the major factors behind heart diseases.

Q.4. How to check the cholesterol levels?

There is no particular symptom/s of high blood cholesterol levels. Thus, you need to get it checked on a regular basis by undertaking a blood test, named lipoprotein profile. This test includes analysis of:

  • HDL (the "good" cholesterol)
  • LDL (the "bad" cholesterol)
  • Total cholesterol level
  • Triglycerides

Q.5. What level can be considered as good and bad for HDL or LDL cholesterols?

A cholesterol or lipid panel test provides the exact information of the HDL or LDL cholesterol levels.

HDL:
  • HDL level more than 60 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) is considered good.
  • HDL level less than 40 mg/dL is not considered good for health.
LDL:
  • LDL level less than 100 mg/dL is considered good.
  • LDL level from 160 to 189 mg/dL is high and considered bad for the health.

Lower than 160 mg/dL is borderline high and more than 190 mg/dL is considered very high. People with high HDL have low risks of heart diseases and vice versa.
